The X-Series has come a long way in a few years where now it’s more unusual for us to see a model with a single-tip bow than a pickle-fork one. Most surprising, though, may be just how much riders love this boats wake. We were pleasantly surprised that the X-15 threw out wakes so respectable, especially with just a 650-pound rear bag. Double-ups are a blast, giving the rider a solid peak at the top exactly like they should. The wakes were pretty wide as well, great for advanced riders. You will love riding at 70 feet.

It’s true that preventive maintenance may cost more in the short run, but will save you thousands of dollars, and wasted weekends during the life of your boat. Does a boat ever break down when you’re not using it? No, it breaks down on the weekend when you’re using it, often ruining your weekend. It’s always better to prevent a major problem by solving a minor one.

Water impellers, and batteries are a couple of examples of preventive maintenance. They should be changed every 2-years even if they don’t seem to be giving you problems now. A $200.00 water pump impeller could save you from spending $5000.00- 7500.00 for a new motor from overheating. Catastrophic damage can be done even if you have a warning system. A battery that’s about to go bad won’t always give you a warning either. It may start your boat, but fail later in the day after running the stereo for a few hours.

Most boat owners are in a break, and fix mode. Instead of spending a few dollars more to do preventive maintenance they just fix what’s broken at the time. There is a misconception that high fuel prices has had a negative effect on boaters. Boaters go boating, and may adjust their usage to allow for higher prices. Instead of using the boat every weekend during the season they may use it three out of four. Instead of cruising to the other end of the lake they might go halfway, and comeback, but boaters will always go boating.

I remember the first time gas hit $4.00 per gallon. Everyone said it was the end of boating as well as other hobbies that require fuel, like Big RVS. Both industries have done very well despite high fuel prices.

What has changed in sales? The consumers have chosen to purchase late model pre-owned rather than new. A lot of manufacturers have cut production drastically. It has actually had a positive effect on used boats. There’s more pressure on the used market than there has ever been. Try and find a 2007 model, or newer. You’ll find out quickly, there just isn’t much out there. Due to supply and demand used boat prices have actually gone up in the last few years. If you see a late model used boat you like, don’t hesitate too long as someone else may be boating while you’re still standing on the dock.

Be aware that the books used to evaluate boat pricing are behind the times. Unfortunately most lending institutions use the NADA book to establish a boat’s value. In most cases they are 10-20% below actual market prices. This hurts when trying to finance a boat. It means having to put larger down payments down.
